Nicolas Cage has a new upcoming thriller making its way to theaters, and it looks like a delightful paranoid horror extravaganza. The Surfer is sporting intense sun rays and extreme surfer testosterone in high capacity for what looks like a wild, freaky, and (hopefully) entertaining ride.
Synopsis: In the psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan, a man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals whose mantra is “don’t live here, don’t surf here.” Humiliated and angry, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point.
Verdict: So far, it’s looking like a more aggressive version of Mandy (2018). Heavy symbolism, deadly cult figures, and Cage’s character attempting to defend someone he loves. Instead of the isolated dark woods we’ve got the bright beach and strong ocean waves.
That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since Mandy is a favorite of mine, and I do enjoy a good weird psychological horror/thriller. The question is if the trailer has showed us all the weirdness or is there more to discover in the movie itself? I guess we’ll see.
